{"id":642,"date":"2025-10-06T10:27:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T10:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hallsintheforest.com\/?p=642"},"modified":"2025-11-06T11:07:31","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T11:07:31","slug":"what-is-tropical-gothic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hallsintheforest.com\/de\/2025\/10\/06\/what-is-tropical-gothic\/","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Gothic: The Gothic That Breathes Fire Instead of Fog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When most people think of <strong>Gothic fiction<\/strong>, their minds immediately travel to Europe:<br>fog-drenched graveyards, ruined abbeys, Byronic madness, and polite English ghosts who know how to haunt with manners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they\u2019re not wrong.<br>Foggy ruins and Anne Radcliffe <em>are<\/em> Gothic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what if I told you there is an entire branch of Gothic fiction that doesn\u2019t grow out of the cold, misty moors\u2026<br>but from <strong>heat, jungle, and colonization<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curious?<br>Come with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is Tropical Gothic?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m <strong>Ariane Saltoris<\/strong>\u2014folklorist, Gothic scholar, the publisher at <a href=\"https:\/\/caiporabooks.com\/collections\/book-collections\">Caipora Books<\/a> and storyteller at <em>Halls in the Forest<\/em>, which happens to be three things: this blog, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@hallsintheforest\">YouTube channel <\/a>and a book collection. All baring the same poetical name and it is where I share eerie folklore and dark fiction from around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, we talk about a genre I deeply love:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tropical Gothic<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tropical Gothic is a form of Gothic fiction born not from European anxieties about science or rationality, but from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Colonial violence<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural clash<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Erased mythologies<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Slavery and exploitation<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Forced Christianity over ancient beliefs<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The trauma that still breathes beneath the land<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It emerges particularly in colonized regions\u2014especially <strong>Latin America<\/strong>\u2014where horror is not hypothetical. It is historical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, the monsters are not just ghosts.<br>They are <em>legacies.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cNew term, old tradition.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the name <em>Tropical Gothic<\/em> is recent in academic circles, the tradition is not.<br>In <strong>Brazil<\/strong>, writers explored this genre long before anyone gave it a label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, many 19th-century stories portrayed rural populations as a threat to \u201cnational progress\u201d\u2014a deeply colonial gaze. Some authors wrote <strong>in defense<\/strong> of those people. Others wrote to <strong>condemn<\/strong> them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What did we get?<br>Stories of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cannibalism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ghosts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monsters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Colonial nightmares wearing folkloric masks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One powerful example is <strong>&#8220;The Pigs&#8221;<\/strong> by <strong>J\u00falia Lopes de Almeida<\/strong>\u2014a story about an Indigenous woman pregnant on the doorstep of the white man who used her, abandoned her, and left to marry a white woman. That is Tropical Gothic: horror rooted not only in fantasy, but in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Modern Voices of Tropical Gothic<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the genre is thriving\u2014especially through women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some remarkable names:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mariana Enr\u00edquez<\/strong> (Argentina): ghosts of dictatorship, exile, eerie children<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>M\u00f3nica Ojeda<\/strong> (Ecuador): Catholic trauma, violence, girlhood horror<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Giovanna Rivero<\/strong> (Bolivia): body horror, spirituality, psychological dread<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gothic is, and always has been, a <strong>deeply feminine genre<\/strong>.<br>Women know fear.
